How much is your NHL franchise worth? : Forbes magazine

Forbes Special Report: The Business of Hockey

How much is your city's NHL team worth?
Which NHL players deliver the most value to their teams?

For some people the business of sports is even more interesting than the games themselves. For these folks, Forbes has done a really good job of analyzing each NHL hockey team's value; based on their team, their market, their gate receipts, the broadcast revenue, their stadium contract, their brand and other financial factors.

FYI The Vancouver Canucks are the ninth most valuable team in the NHL at $211 Million.

2007 Top Travel Destinations

Conde Nast Readers' Choice Awards 2007
While Conde Nast is more of a luxury travel magazine (I normally prefer the budget travel), their readers have spoken and made their choices for the best travel destinations of 2007.
The categories are Top Cities, Top Islands, Top Transportation, Top Hotels and Top Resorts, and are divided up by region.
Yes, Vancouver, Victoria and many of the BC Resorts rated highly in the Americas surveys.

So where are the best hostels and best cheap flights?

SI Writers write about "The Best Game I've Ever Seen"

Sports Illustrated writers' "Best Game I've Ever Seen"

Sports Illustrated pulls off a great concept by asking all their writers to write about the "Best Game I've Ever Seen".

There are lots of entries, and a huge range of sports are covered. Of course, since there are sports writers at all of the major sporting events, all the most recent Greatest Sports Events are covered, like the 1987 Canada Cup hockey tournament, Buster Douglas over Mike Tyson in 1990, Tiger's first title in 1996, one of Michael Jordan's most famous playoff victories and Flutie's Hail Mary victory in 1984. For me, it's often the more obscure sports that make for the most interesting reads, such as Italy's Palio horse race, an Olympic tennis match in Athens, Olympic heavyweight boxing trials, 1995 cross-town rivalry in college hockey, and an NCAA college wrestling tournament.

The concept works, as the writers pour out their passion onto the page, and explain what makes the most famous, and not so famous, sports events so important to their lives and their careers.

Canada's Best Music Journalism

Exclaim Magazine

Exclaim is Canada's authoritative music rag, with profiles of the coolest up-and-coming artists, playlist charts from Canada's college radio stations, and have indie pop culture news (not to be confused with the trashy mainstream news).

They do feature a lot of new Canadian music, but have also profiled exciting global scenes as well. If you know anything about Canadian music these days, you'll know it's doing okay. The reviews are extensive, featuring films, DVDs, concerts, and music from every genre, including: heavy metal, electronic, hip hop, alt-country, pop and rock (though not mainstream), punk, funk, experimental and avant garde, soul and world.

It's the magazine that people WISH that Rolling Stone and Spin were.

When I lived in Japan, Exclaim was the music magazine that I chose to subscribe to because of their excellent pop culture coverage. The low international rates were a bonus. In Canada, the hardcopy version is certainly worth more than the free cover price.

What's on TV in Canada?

Best TV listings for Canadians: Sympatico / MSN TV Listings/ TV Guide

Mrs. Linkjockey doesn't like me flipping through every single channel, trying to find something interesting to watch on the boob tube, and the local cable company's listing is too slow for me. Yesterday, I saw a review of all the TV listings sites on the Internet... for Americans. You enter your postal code, and the sites tell you what's on television in your area. None of the sites worked for Canadian postal codes. None.

So I did some of my own research, and discovered that the best results for me, the best TV listings for Canadians comes from old reliable TV Guide . They show listings for cable, digital cable, satellite providers and antenna for your postal code, over a 2 hour window. They show all the channels on the same window, and if you click on the name of a show, you get a little synopsis. In other words, they provide everything you're looking for, without actually streaming the show to you.

Honourable mention: Canadian Cable Listings from TV Times
If your TV provider isn't listed on TV Guide, TV Times may have a better selection of TV providers. The only downside is that they only show 20 channels at once. And my dad was telling me that TV magazines are dying.

Photography magazine meets Web 2.0

JPG Magazine: Themes

JPG is a real-world photography magazine that seems to be based on user-submitted pics and articles . Neat idea, but the proof is in the pudding, and... the photos are gorgeous and compelling! Users submit photos to a variety of categories, such as: Entropy, pictures of loved ones, Democracy, Danger, pictures of people working, pictures of music performance and the number 7. Registered users (free) vote on the best ones, and these make it into the magazine.

If I had some great photos, I'd submit them. The rewards aren't great for having your work published ($100 and a year's subscription), but the higher profile is probably worth it.

There isn't much advertising in the magazine at all, but if I was in advertising, I'd be contacting the artists that took these pictures, and licensing them like crazy. They're stunning!

Download a free copy of the magazine here.

Link Aggregator - Best of the Best

Forbes.com Best of the Web

Forbes magazine, eh? Isn't that for wealthy, money managers and greedy businessmen? Yeah, maybe. But their collection of links is excellent!

There is a vast difference between having lots and lots of links, and having a collection of well organized links to the best sites in every category. The folks at Forbes have really done their homework. This site links to the best of the best.

Their categories are:
Blogs
Collecting
Education
Health
Investing
Look It Up
Luxe Shopping
Management
Personal Finance and Careers
The Good Life
Travel

Ok, so maybe I could live without the Luxe Shopping category, but the rest seem to be really good collections of links. Each category, breaks down further into subcategories. Even though the categories seem so simple, they claim to have included over 3,000 sites, which qualify because of Content, Design, Speed, Navigation and Customization. Wow!!!

Aggregators like this are great for link scavengers like me. I might be able to get a whole week’s worth of really good links off of this one website. Now, if Christopher Walks only had the time to check them all out, Christopher Walks might be able to put more links up on the Linkjockey website.

If you have suggestions for the Linkjockey, please email them to me.

Keeping tabs on Japanese style...

Japanese Lifestyle Magazine Tokyocube

The Linkjockey used to live and teach English in Japan. There's so much going on in Japan in terms of art, design, travel and style that just isn't replicated anywhere else.

I miss Muji, The Loft and going to shopping. I miss keeping up with the latest 5-minute trends. I miss experiential restaurants and the best creepy children's toys for adults. But all is not lost, and I can still track a few of these things through Tokyocube.

Tokyocube brings a lot of these elements together in their very stylish online magazine.
