Video - NYT's Mark Bittman on What's wrong with the food we eat

TED has all kinds of video presentations that they describe as "Inspired talks by the world's greatest thinkers and doers". Linkjockey has linked to food journalist Mark Bittman's writing before from the New York Times, but this is the first video.

Canada's Best Music Journalism

Exclaim Magazine

Exclaim is Canada's authoritative music rag, with profiles of the coolest up-and-coming artists, playlist charts from Canada's college radio stations, and have indie pop culture news (not to be confused with the trashy mainstream news).

They do feature a lot of new Canadian music, but have also profiled exciting global scenes as well. If you know anything about Canadian music these days, you'll know it's doing okay. The reviews are extensive, featuring films, DVDs, concerts, and music from every genre, including: heavy metal, electronic, hip hop, alt-country, pop and rock (though not mainstream), punk, funk, experimental and avant garde, soul and world.

It's the magazine that people WISH that Rolling Stone and Spin were.

When I lived in Japan, Exclaim was the music magazine that I chose to subscribe to because of their excellent pop culture coverage. The low international rates were a bonus. In Canada, the hardcopy version is certainly worth more than the free cover price.

Plays Football in high school- without legs

Legless Football Player 3

Today's link is an article by sports photographer, Thomas E Witte, about an assignment covering high school football player, Bobby Martin of Colonel White High School in Dayton, Ohio. Bobby Martin is a unique football player because he was born without legs, and uses his hands to get around.

As a struggling photojournalist, Witte writes about the process of getting the assignment, his struggle over how to cover this story with respect and accuracy, and the resulting success of his images in Sports Illustrated and beyond.

I think that Witte succeeds because his pictures really demonstrate the incredible skill, athleticism and toughness that Bobby Martin exhibits. The article also sheds some light on the workings of the business side of photojournalism.

The 2007 Pulitzer Prize Winners

The Pulitzer Prizes - 2007 Winners

On Tuesday, April 17, the 2007 Pulitzer Prize winners were announced. The Pulitzer Prize is awarded for excellence in Journalism (14 awards in 2007), and in Letters, Journalism and Music (7 awards in 2007). This is the best of the best of American writing, and the Pulitzers are the pinnacle for American journalists. Two special awards were awarded in 2007 to science fiction writer, Ray Bradbury and jazz saxophonist, John Coltrane.

Today's site is not just a list, the highlight of the site is that there are links to the Pulitzer winning works for most categories, including: editorial cartoons, feature photography, investigative journalism, editorial writing, and breaking news photography.

Mega News Aggregator

popurls.com

This is my favourite site of 2006.

Popurls.com is a news website that doesn't have any reporters; it's a news aggregator. It grabs the current top 10 news headlines from Google news, Digg, Wired magazine, Yahoo news, Netscape, Fark, NowPublic as well as the top entries on del.icio.us, Flickr, YouTube and more. This means you get hundreds (thousands?) of links to bleeding edge news stories from everywhere on the web. Harness the power of web users finding the best news stories for you.

It's my home page in my browser, and I skim through it every time I open a new window. I have often seen news stories broken here first, literally DAYS before I read them in the local newspaper. The site is well designed, customizable, and allows for fast skimming.

Congratulations! You are now up to date, and have your finger on the pulse of the internet.

Happy New Year!
