Blogging R.E.M. songs

Pop Songs 07 - I’ll write about every R.E.M. song, eventually
R.E.M. was a seminal band of the eighties and nineties, and now the Pop Songs 07 blog is reviewing each song from their catalogue one-by-one. Some of the entries have links to free mp3 links of cover versions.
Cool concept.

'Heroes" Season 1 Report Card

Episode Guide- 'Heroes' Report Card: We Grade All 23 Episodes

I'm not a huge tv watcher, except for hockey, but I did enjoy the series 'Heroes" last year. In preparation for the new season, EW has reviews and plot summaries for each of the debut season's episodes. Good stuff!

The iPhone is coming! 5 Essential iPhone links

June 29 is the official release date for the iPhone in the USA, and the hype is enormous. When will it come to Canada or other countries? No word yet.

Maybe it's not so bad, and us foreigners will let the bugs get worked out first. Are you now wishing that you'd purchased one of the original iPods? Didn't think so.

Apple iPhone - official Apple site, with initial iPhone specs

MY iTablet - iPhone news blog (which covered the iPhone rate plans released today)
iPhone Hacks - another iPhone news blog, covering reviews, hacks, and the hype
David Pogue's iPhone FAQs 1 & 2 - Written by columnist from the NY Times
Reviews may be added as they start popping up.

In case you're wondering what the iPhone has to do with Music Tuesdays, the iPhone is also an iPod and has 4 GB or 8 GB of storage for music.

Canada's Best Music Journalism

Exclaim Magazine

Exclaim is Canada's authoritative music rag, with profiles of the coolest up-and-coming artists, playlist charts from Canada's college radio stations, and have indie pop culture news (not to be confused with the trashy mainstream news).

They do feature a lot of new Canadian music, but have also profiled exciting global scenes as well. If you know anything about Canadian music these days, you'll know it's doing okay. The reviews are extensive, featuring films, DVDs, concerts, and music from every genre, including: heavy metal, electronic, hip hop, alt-country, pop and rock (though not mainstream), punk, funk, experimental and avant garde, soul and world.

It's the magazine that people WISH that Rolling Stone and Spin were.

When I lived in Japan, Exclaim was the music magazine that I chose to subscribe to because of their excellent pop culture coverage. The low international rates were a bonus. In Canada, the hardcopy version is certainly worth more than the free cover price.

The best source of Web 2.0 news

Mashable

Mashable is a comprehensive news site covering the events of Web 2.0.

In their own words, "Mashable is the world's largest blog focused exclusively on social networks." In practical terms, some of the news stories in the past couple of days have been about:
- a wine review site (Snooth Launches Basic Wine Reviews Site),
- new Facebook applications (SmartTravel, NewsCloud and Jaiku Facebook Apps),
- an online music collaboration site (JamNow Launches Music Collaboration Site),
- a new advertising medium for bloggers (Wize Launches Affiliate Widgets for Bloggers) and
- Web 2.0 finance and aquisitions news (ThisNext Raises Round of Venture Debt).

In true Web 2.0 fashion, you can create your own profile Mashable including friends, tags and messaging.

Free Daily Jazz mp3 download

Free Jazz Downloads - all about jazz

If you're like me (which you may or may not be), you like jazz, you respect it, but don't know much about modern jazz, other than those songs by Herbie Hancock and Bobby McFerrin, and wouldn't know where to begin to learn more.

One of the premier Jazz sites, all about jazz, lets you download a new track from their site everyday, for free after creating a barebones login with just an email address and password. Sure it could be easier to subscribe to a podcast, but where else are you going to get free jazz downloads.

all about jazz call themselves "The World's Largest Jass Music Website", and I'm not going to disagree. In addition to their DRM-free digital music store, they have great articles, podcasts, guides, links and reviews of new and old jazz albums. What? You know somewhere else that has comprehensive reviews of new jazz albums? Or jazz interviews and concert reviews? I didn't think so. Hurray for all about jazz!!!

USB turntable

Ion Audio - iTTUSB Turntable
I've found this neat little gadget. It's a standard turntable that plays vinyl records, but it connects to your computer by usb. You can use the spin records live, digitize your vinyl, put some effects on your records and get new sounds for your recording project. The iTTUSB Turntable works with Mac and Windows computers, and includes basic Audacity software to digitally record your audio and clean it up.

I've even heard it suggested that new kinds of turntables are leading to an increase in sales of vinyl records. Increasing music sales, eh? Now there's something you don't hear everyday.

Has anyone used the iTTUSB Turntable? I haven't seen any real reviews, so if you have any opinions, please write something in the comments.

Very cool tools!

Kevin Kelly Cool Tools

Practical user-submitted gadgets, products and services that have actually been USED and recommended by real people. The website and email list are maintained by Kevin Kelly; co-founder of Wired magazine. The mailing list is sent out weekly.

There is a huge range of items listed.

Some of the Tools are obvious, but most are pretty obscure. Some are even free!

I really appreciate that the listings are not sponsored; they are suggested by real-world fanatics that have hands-on experience with Tools they nominate. In a world of millions of similar products, these recommendations and reviews mean a LOT to me when I'm considering what to buy.
